Class Descriptions: Mixed-age class

Each week in Music Together® Mixed-Age Classes at Music Together Chesapeake, babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and the grownups who love them gather for 45 minutes of fun-filled family music time. Your teacher will lead you and the other families in music activities ranging from lullabies to full-on jam sessions (with child-friendly instruments, of course). It’s so much fun you won’t realize how much learning is taking place!

You’ll take home the award-winning music used in class, along with an illustrated songbook and other resources. As you discover new ways to play with music all week long, you’ll be supporting your child’s music-learning and overall development---even if you don’t think of yourself as a great singer or dancer.

Try a free class! Why Mixed Ages?

Child development researchers discovered that grouping children of different ages in one class encourages natural, family-style learning, so Music Together developed the Mixed-Age Music Class. In this class, everyone participates at their own levels: babies vocalize, listen, and observe; toddlers play and experiment; and preschoolers build confidence as they emerge as classroom leaders. Grownups are happy because everyone can come to class together.

“My husband teases me because whenever I mention Music Together to anyone, he always pipes up my next line which is 'best money we ever spent.' I truly mean it. Kudos to Ken and Lili for a program that outshines any other I have seen around.” —Kim, Princeton, NJ

Mixed-age Music Class

This is the essential Music Together class, one that a child can attend from birth through kindergarten -- and through all nine song collections. This basic class follows the recommendations of child development researchers -- grouping children of a variety of ages because this fosters natural, family-style learning. Younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones, older children learn by leading younger ones, and adults are happy because the children in the family can go to class together. Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, or exploring musical instruments. Any caregiver -- parents, grandparents, nanny -- can bring the children. The whole family is welcome for this important family music experience.

Music Together Babies (0-8 months)

Every child’s development benefits from early exposure to music and movement. Because the early months are so important, Music Together offers two options for babies. Babies eight months and younger at the time of registration may attend a Mixed Ages Class, whether registered on their own or attending free with an older brother or sister. Babies may also take the special “Babies Class” offered as a one-semester introduction to Music Together. (This class cannot be repeated.) The music activities and materials are specially designed for parents who want to learn as much as possible about music development in babies. Meet other parents of newborns and learn some fascinating music activities you can recreate at home with your baby.

Generations Music Class

Senior residents join in the fun, singing and dancing along with the children and their parents or caregivers. Infants, toddlers and kindergarteners get a chance to befriend older folks in the neighborhood. Atria Manresa is a lovely facility overlooking the Severn River in Annapolis, on the opposite side of the bridge from the Naval Academy. We love bringing the joy of family music making to this senior community, and to afford families an opportunity to participate in this rich musical experience.

Music Together con Español

Music Together con Español is a bilingual English/Spanish version of the Music Together mixed-age class you know and love. The songs in this fall’s Fiddle Song Collection have been recorded in a mixture of English and Spanish, which you’ll take home on a CD and also be able to access online. And, in addition to your weekly classes and the bilingual recording, you’ll receive the new English-language illustrated songbook, a booklet with the Spanish lyrics, and a family newsletter with more at-home music-making ideas that can hacer que cada día sea más divertido—make every day more fun!
